Inside of a sacred temple, Atago Pond has long been a place to worship water since the feudal era in Hiroshima. One ordinary morning on August 6, 1945, the pond was buried in rubble. The trees that once cast beautiful shifting shadows on the surface of the pond were instantly lost, and the rocks that surrounded the pond were scorched by a blinding, unnatural light. Six years later, the pond remained, devoid of water on the side of Peace Boulevard, which was named by the people in the spirit of lasting peace, along with the trees that were thought to have vanished.Kurogane holly trees, muku trees, persimmon trees, hackberry trees, Japanese bead trees. From what little remained of these twelve trees, new life sprouted and grew into trees that cling to the surrounding rocks to support their trunks and trees whose roots crawl and stretch deep into the earth. These hibaku trees managed not only to survive, but to thrive once again despite the drastic changes all around them. Today, they continue to provide comfortable shade in the very same place that they stood on that fateful morning. Take a moment to stand where they stand and tell me: what do you see?
