広島城跡は、戦時中に大本営（だいほんえい）が置かれた場所で、広島は「軍都」と呼ばれていました。原爆によって、広島城の天守閣は破壊され、大本営の建物もすべて壊れました。その前庭に植えられていたクロガネモチは、被爆しながらも新しい芽を出し、今も緑の葉を茂らせています。足元を見ると、爆心地側の根の張り方が少なく、反対側の根が大きく成長して盛りあがっているのが、よくわかります。秋になると、赤い実をつける美しい木です。
Hiroshima Castle was once home to the Imperial Headquarters in wartime, thus making Hiroshima known as a military city. The atomic bomb destroyed the castle tower and the Imperial Headquarters building. These kurogane holly trees were planted in the front garden of the Imperial Headquarters and despite the bombing, grew new shoots. It continues to grow beautiful green leaves to this day. If you look down, you’ll see that the roots on the side nearest to the hypocenter are thin, while the roots on the other side have grown thick and stick out from the soil. In the fall, the trees are covered in lovely red berries.
