Somei-Yoshino Cherry Blossom Trees

At Hiroshima City Hall, there are three Somei-Yoshino cherry blossom trees that survived the bombing. At the time of the bombing, the City Hall building managed to survive, and was used as a municipal office while undergoing numerous renovations and repairs. In 1985, 40 years after the bombing, construction began to tear down the old and deteriorating City Hall and build a new one. During construction, the cherry blossom trees were temporarily relocated to a farm that took care of trees; they were replanted in their current position when construction of the new City Hall building was complete. In the springtime each year, these cherry blossom trees can be seen in full bloom.
