広島城の天守閣を望む堀端で、ひときわ目をひくクスノキ。幹が途中から大きく曲がり、添え木で支えられています。爆心地とは反対側に生々しい傷痕があり、これは当時、近くにあった広島陸軍幼年学校の校舎が焼けて、その火が燃え移った火傷のあとです。堀をめぐる遊歩道にあるため、根元の土が踏み固められて弱っていましたが、木のまわりを柵で囲い、土をやわらかくしてからは元気になりました。
This impressive camphor tree is located near the moat of Hiroshima Castle on the side where you can see the castle tower. The trunk is severely bent halfway through and held in place by wooden supports. It also sustained heavy damages on the side opposite of the hypocenter from a fire which broke out at the nearby Hiroshima Army School building. The remnants of this fire damage are still visible on the tree today. As the tree is located on the castle moat walking path, its roots have been weakened by foot traffic; however, the roots were revived by fencing off the area around the tree and loosening the soil around it.
