Camphor Tree

Long ago, the area around the Shirakami Shrine was the coast. It is said that the shrine was founded to pray for safe sea voyages by crowning a rock with white gohei streamers. The building was lost to the fires of the bombing, and these camphor trees grew from in-between the rocks which remained. The surfaces of these rocks are still red from the bombing, and the stone lantern, koma-inu statue, and hand-washing basin are all designated as atomic bomb heritage items.
