長遠寺（ちょうおんじ）は、江戸時代の初期に創建された寺院で、ソテツもこの頃に植えられました。戦前の写真には、本堂の両側に大きなソテツが写っています。原爆によって本堂は倒壊して焼け、ソテツも黒焦げになりました。その後、根株から新たに芽が伸びて大きくなった木が、今の場所に植えられました。長遠寺は、児童文芸誌の『赤い鳥』を創刊した、鈴木三重吉（すずき・みえきち）の菩提寺でもあります。

Chōon-ji Temple was built in the early Edo Period (1603-1868), the same time that this sago palm was planted. In pre-war photos, you can see two large sago palms flanking the main hall; this hall was destroyed and burned in the bombing, and the sago palms blackened by flames. After the bombing, new sprouts began to grow from the roots underground and the large tree that grew was replanted in this spot. Chōon-ji Temple is also the family temple of Miekichi Suzuki, the creator of the children’s culture magazine Akai Tori (Red Bird).
