原爆によって基町あたり一帯は焼け野原になり、川沿いに立つクスノキも、火災に巻きこまれて燃えました。そのときの傷痕が、北東側の幹に残っています。火傷を負いながらも翌年には芽を出し、緑の葉をつけました。この場所は現在、市営住宅の駐車場になっており、クスノキの根元が踏み固められることのないよう整備されています。
The atomic bomb left the Moto-machi area a scorched plain, and this camphor tree along the river was engulfed in the firestorm that was to follow. You can still see the marks from the fire on the northeast side of the trunk. Despite being burned, new shoots began to grow the next year, turning into green leaves. The area has since been turned into a parking lot for municipal housing; the lot was designed to ensure that the roots of this camphor tree would not be impeded.
