広島別院（ひろしまべついん）のソテツは、戦前、本堂の正面に植えられていました。見事な株立ちでしたが、原爆によって建物は全焼し、ソテツも炎に包まれて黒焦げになりながら、株は生き残りました。その株が育ち、1964年、本堂が再建されたとき、鐘楼の横に移植されました。曲がりくねった幹は、植物が成長する方向を認識する重力屈性を失った、被爆樹木の特徴ではないかと考えらえています。

The sago palm at Hiroshima Betsu-in Temple was planted in front of the main hall before the war. It was a remarkable and stout palm, but it would not escape the bombing. Both the temple hall and the palm were blackened and consumed in flames, but the stump managed to survive. The stump would continue to grow and flourish, and when the main hall was rebuilt in 1964, the palm was replanted next to the bell tower. Its curved trunk is thought to be because the tree has lost its gravitropism, the ability to recognize the direction of its growth, a characteristic of hibaku trees.
