観音（かんおん）小学校があるこの場所には、被爆当時、県立広島第二中学校がありました。原爆によって校舎は壊れ、犠牲になった子どもの数は今でもわかりません。周囲に植えられていたクスノキは、原爆に耐えて生き残りました。幹を二つに裂かれた姿で立つクロガネモチは、卒業生の家で被爆し、黒焦げの状態から甦ったものです。1989年、校庭に移植され、この場所は今「観音の森」と呼ばれています。

The place where Kannon Elementary School stands used to be the Hiroshima Prefectural Second High School at the time of the bombing. The school building was destroyed in the bombing, and the precise number of student lives lost is still unknown. The camphor trees planted in the area withstood the bombing and continue to survive today. The kurogane holly tree, which stands with its trunk split in two, survived the bombing at the home of one of the school alumni. Despite being blackened and burnt, the tree came back to life and was replanted in the schoolyard in 1989. This collection of hibaku trees is known as the Kannon Forest.
