Bodaiju

Camellia

Many trees could be found inside the temple complex of Hōshō-in, a temple with over 400 years of history, before the war. The main building was destroyed in the bombing, and everything was burned to the ground. The camellia tree, said to be five meters tall, managed to survive, despite being blackened. The next year, new buds began to grow, and even today, its roots are thick and strong, a reminder of its past glory. When the main building was rebuilt, the camellia tree was replanted at its current location. There was also a bodhi tree inside the complex which began to grow new buds only ten days after the bombing. While this bodhi tree withered a few years ago, a new trunk has started to grow from the roots.
