三篠神社（みささじんじゃ）の社殿前に立つご神木のクスノキは、近くの民家で被爆した兄弟クスノキの一本です。1954年に献木を受けたもので、もう一本は三篠小学校の校庭に移植されました。苔むした幹は、ノキシノブやセッコクなどに覆われ、古木の風格を漂わせています。戦前、三篠神社の境内は、今よりもっと広い鎮守の森でした。原爆によって社殿も森もすべて焼き尽くされたなか、ボケの木だけは根を残して生き抜き、翌年、この境内で芽を吹きました。この地に被爆前の鎮守の森を取り戻そうと、種から苗木を育てて植えたクスノキも、幹まわりが3ｍを超えるほどに成長しています。

The camphor tree that stands before the hall of Misasa Shrine was once one half of a pair of camphor trees which survived the bombing in the yard of a local home. Donated in 1954, the other hibaku tree was replanted in the schoolyard at Misasa Elementary School. Its mossy trunk is covered in weeping ferns and sekkoku orchids, giving it the appearance of an ancient tree. Before the war, Misasa Shrine was home to a large forest, even larger than the one today, but both the forest and the shrine hall fell victim to the fires of the bombing. Only a single Japanese quince tree managed to survive, its roots still intact, to grow new buds the next year. In an effort to bring back the forest that surrounded the temple before the war, they planted seeds and raised trees. One of these, a camphor tree, has grown into a hearty tree with a trunk over three meters in circumference.
